The short answer
a home maintenance subscription gives you a team that comes out and fixes everyday problems, for a set monthly price. Home insurance pays towards the cost of putting things right after an unexpected event like a fire, flood or burglary. They do different jobs, and most homes want both.
What a home maintenance subscription is.
You pay a set amount each month. When something goes wrong at home, you report it, and a tradesperson comes out to fix it. The labour is already paid for.
With FixAble, that means:
- One team for every job. Plumbing and heating, electrical and general maintenance repairs on every plan, with roofing repairs and gutter clearance on Comfort and Complete.
- Labour included on every job.
- Up to £250 of materials included per job. If a job needs more, we quote it separately with your £250 allowance taken off.
- An appointment booked within 24 hours of you reporting an issue.
How the two compare.
| Home maintenance subscription | Home insurance | |
|---|---|---|
| What it's for | Everyday repairs and upkeep | Unexpected events and major damage |
| Typical examples | Dripping tap, faulty socket, sticking door, slipped slate, blocked gutter | Fire, flood, storm damage, theft, subsidence |
| What you get | A tradesperson who comes and fixes it | Money, or arranged repairs, after a successful claim |
| How you use it | Report an issue | Make a claim |
| Planned upkeep | Yes, such as an annual boiler service | No |
Where they meet.
Take a burst pipe. Fixing the pipe is a plumbing repair, which is what a subscription is for. The damaged ceiling and carpet underneath are what home insurance is for.
That's why a subscription isn't a replacement for insurance. FixAble doesn't include damage from fire, flood, storm or subsidence, so you'll still want buildings and contents insurance.
What a subscription doesn't include.
Being clear about this matters. A FixAble subscription doesn't include:
- White goods and appliances
- Structural work
- Full replacements, such as a new boiler or roof
- Damage from misuse, or from DIY repairs that don't meet British Standards
- Damage from fire, flood, storm and similar events
The full list is on what's not included.
Who a subscription suits.
- People who'd rather not find a tradesperson every time. One report, whatever the job.
- People who like to know the cost up front. Your price is set before anything goes wrong.
- First-time buyers who haven't built up a list of trades yet.
- Older homeowners who want a team they know.
- Families buying for someone else. See gifting.
Who it might not suit.
If you're handy, enjoy doing repairs yourself and already have tradespeople you rely on, you may not need one. We'd rather say so.
